Munsoooooooooon in Mumbai

Rains are here unfortunately.....vat to do?!

Rains in the countryside may be sweet, but in Mumbai, all the smells (all of 'em yucky) are just magnified and we have to suffer worse roads (how can it be any worse, you ask?) than during the rest of the year. Not only to travel on but also walk on....slush slush slush and i ent talkin bout the one u can sip on.

Moderate "showers" for a couple of hours and you better start a couple of hours early if u wanna reach your destination on time.

A break from work/school/college for a day here & there due to heavy rains & floods in the city is understandable. But remember a few years back when noboby could step out the house for a whole week? Haha!! We got so bored we ended up playing boardgames all the time!

And not to forget the day it rained cats n dogs (highest ever), 26/7 was it, i'm not too good with dates, when everyone was stranded! Actually there were two such days.....the first time, i stuck it out in an overcrowded bus (full of pervs), standing on one toe for hours on end as the bus crawled along. The other time i took a train halfway to my destination and walked the rest of the way in waist deep water. But some ppl had to wade in chest deep water & stuff, and all the leetle kids must have been so frightened ~but think of the children! sniff sniff~. Well i'll bet everyone came across atleast one dead rat & its feces & of course the good citizens' feces+urine+paan spits....i even saw a dead dog floating by.

I can't think of even one nice thing to say about the rains in Mumbai, forget the cliched cuppa & hot pakodas. You wanna go out somewhere, and the rains will literally rain on your parade. It's always happenin to me! So i've decided this season round that i'm not gonna let it affect me. A lil rain aint gonna ruin my plans....so fudge u!!

To Those Who Feed Stray Dogs

Here's a word of advice to ppl who feed stray dogs regularly....most of you give the dogs biscuits and the like to munch on. Instead you can feed boiled eggs! The egg white is number 1 in protein digestibility & has the perfect amino acid profile, and good quality protein is very important for dogs.....while biscuits don't provide much in the way of nutrition. Also, feeding the dog an egg (which costs around Rs.3) turns out cheaper in the long run than a packet of biscuits, say Parle G (which costs Rs.4). But feed only BOILED eggs with the SHELL REMOVED to avoid infections like salmonellosis.

You can follow the procedure below.........

  1. You can check how fresh the egg is by immersing it in a bowl of water : if the egg sinks & lies on its side at the bottom of the bowl, it is completely fresh. If it stands up but stays at the bottom, it is partially fresh. If it bobs up & floats on the surface, it is rotten & it's time to chuck it.
  2. If the egg was kept in the fridge, first bring it to room temperature before boiling, to avoid it from cracking.
  3. Immerse it in a vessel filled with water. The height of water should be atleast a couple of inches above the egg.
  4. Add a pinch of salt to the water and boil.
  5. After it is fully boiling (big bubbles) switch off the gas.
  6. Cover the vessel immediately and keep it covered for around 15 minutes.
  7. Take out the egg, let it cool a bit if it's too hot to handle & remove the shell properly.
  8. Feed it to the dog in question.
  9. Watch it gobble it up!

BEST ain't the best

There used to be a time when i thought BEST buses made short distance travel a breeze....well i wouldn't go that far, but they were somewhat useful. But i don't anymore....and not because of the increasing crowd (though i hate that too)........but because of the damn tv screens they've installed in most of the buses. These just keep playing stoopid adverts, songs & other shite, which nobody is seeing anyway. And some of them are sooooo loud....it's extremely irritating.....you can't even sleep, you can't even study if ur heading for an exam, you can't even get a moment's peace. You just end up with a headache. Instead of installing these crappy tv screens why couldn't the BEST ppl install small fans or something? That is what is truly needed, to beat the heat in a stuffy overcrowded bus full of stinky ppl!!
Well this city's just gettin more n more brainless everyday, isn't it

Slumdog Millionaire

I mainly went to see this one cauz there's Freida Pinto who luks hot. So it's about how a lil slum boy becomes a millionaire & gets the girl too. Half the ppl(indian) who saw this movie loved it sayin "o! india shinin! be proud!" & the rest are like "they're dissin india by showin it in a bad light".
Well, this is wat i've got to say about this movie........it's very realistic, right from the heaps of shit & garbage to the traffic jams to the family gathered round the teevee eatin pizza!
To those saying the movie only shows our city in a negative way....well it's true! Open your eyes dog - mumbai's the place where malls & huts coexist....it's also crowded, full of ugly high rise buildings, stink, rubbish, traffic snarls, beggars, bad roads, stains & o! i can go on & on....
And to those praising the movie to high heaven.....it's not THAT great! i don't see y there's soooo much hype over it, it's just a timepass movie....catch it if u have time, u don't HAVE to see it. I mean, it's gud, but not great...definitely not Oscar material, least of all the songs. Better made than a bollywood movie though.
The story's quite dumb. Jamal's bro Salim is a meanie who's gud at heart, while jamal is an out & out goody two shoes....Latika is the lil girl that joins them. Well, bout the acting.....none of them have too much to act.....Dev Patel ( jamal) is pretty boring. Freida Pinto (latika) is good to look at, but really doesn't have much to act. Anil Kapoor is just so ott! artificial overacting. Irfan Khan is bearable but really there's no show stealer....generally noboby seems at ease....it just doesn't sound natural.... I felt the boy who plays the teenaged Salim was the only one dat seemed genuine.

And has anyboby heard the word 'slumdog' before?? well i haven't but as usual some ppl think it's derogatory....wateva! To me, "dog" has always been an endearing term. Maybe a transliteration...umm...jhopadpatti kutta crorepati! LOL!!!!!!! Anyhoo, wat me say....it's tp!

Play

Suddenly got this tune in my head....................
Kangaroo Kangaroo dutty kangaroo
Sitting on the railway & doing no.2
the no. 2 is dirrty so wash it in the sea
cut it into pieces & hav it 4 ur tea!!

It was one of the old 'dip/dib' songs we used to sing to decide who's the 'denner'. Sounds like crap, rite. Maybe to today's kids. But all d ppl who grew up between mid 90's & 2002 (1st 10-12 years of life i mean ) shud remeber wat me say. If yawl used to play that is. And no, i don't mean like a specific sport, i mean just "play". Those simple games where u just need some other ppl & an area(cud be a building/park/colony/playground) & ur imagination.
The best part about childhood is coming back from skool, dumpin' yo bags & goin down to play............
Another one of those songs i just remembered................
Once a budda met a buddi under a mangotree
Sed the budda to the buddi - will u marry me,
say yes or no?

Lolz,,,,i'm in splits!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nowadays' kids......i dont really see anyone playin those games we used to play. Or playing period(.) Maybe all are in tutions....they go from KG itself! Gawd! Imagine i got bugged goin for tyoots for 10th & 12th & they have their whole skool life left!
And rememba the ~ frock ~ ??
I rarely ever see any kid (girl) wearing that anymore! O my! And i only stopped wearing 'frocks' wen i was like 10 or 11.
Well, today's generation of pre-teens may be taller & less innocent, but am i glad i ain't one of 'em!

PS> AND, they're missing Cartoon Network! And i mean the original one which used to be in English & after 9pm switch back to TNT.....it was an integral part of my childhood...it even taught me my English!!

Atlast I have sumthin' to blog about!

Guess guess guess...wat is this post about? Ahaaa...the Mumbai terror attacks! Oh nooooo......u've heard enuff about that? So hav I ppl....but wat the heck!

By now ( a week later ) the whole world knows wat happened in Mumbai a week back....about 2 handfuls of terrorists went around terrorizing the ppl of Mumbai. CST most of us have been to. Leopold's most of us have atleast contemplated entering for a chilled beer ...brr...Taj & Oberoi some of us have been to, but all of us have looked at from outside & thought wow! especially in case of Taj. So this time it was too close!!

Can u count the no. of times there's been some or other trouble in this city coz of which u've not been able to go somewhere? It's either floods, bomb scare/blast, Shiv Sena/MNS (it'll take a whole other post bloggin about them!),riots, taxi/train/auto/bus strike, & now....ppl with guns & hand grenades barging into hotels, cafes, hospitals & railway stations.
They say the ppl of Mumbai are cold & heartless, & waste no time in getting on with their lives. A euphamism used is strong, fearless & bouncing back to life as nothing can bog Mumbaikars down. But plz don't give me that crap about the spirit of Mumbai, coz seriously ppl go to work the next day as if nothing has happened, only cauz they have to earn a living.... Who doesn't like an unexpected holiday, right?
Anyhoo, wat i don't understand is how come 300 commandos couldn't overpower like 10-14 terrorists? And why weren't the commandos given the layouts of the hotels? It's not humanly possible for 2 or 3 terrorists to guard each & every entry & exit point of each hotel. So why was it so difficult for the commandos to storm the place & gun them down? Oh yaa, they were worried about hitting a civilian.
And anyhoo 90% of the ppl were killed on the1st night itself. The Marcos & NSGs meanwhile had just woken up & were brushing their teeth! Forget them, the Mumbai police before them didn't know how to use guns & had on useless bullet proof jackets & head gear which could only withstand stone pelting. I guess they expected the terrorists to shoot stones at them, not bullets. And the GRP sitting at CST with their sticks were the first to flee when the terrorists entered & started shooting ppl down.
A 'siege' which goes on for 4 days....where can it happen? Only in India.
If it had been any other country, the situation would have been resolved within an hour or two. But here, it can continue for a week. No wonder this got so much international coverage, much more than 7/11. Main reason - foreigners were also targetted. But the fact is, majority of those who died were Indian.
After this particular episode, noboby's gonna come to Mumbai as a tourist. India's even been named among the top 20 most dangerous countries to visit!
At the end of the day, those of us who've not been directly affected can't deny that we don't feel that thrill of excitement, terror & fear as we watch & wonder...when will it be my turn? After all, there are rumours that a couple of terrorists are still roaming around the streets of Mumbai....
